View from Big Sur road

View of Big Sur bridge

  1. Make sure to bring food: San Francisco is a long way away from LA and there might not be amazing food all along the way especially as soon as you get into Big Sur as it is pretty desertic.
  2. Have lunch by the ocean: it is the perks of driving along the ocean. Stretch your legs, breath some ocean air and nap on the beach for 30 min before hitting the road again.
  3. Enjoy Big Sur: as soon as you are in Big Sur there is so many beautiful views to see so take your time to admire and take pictures. Look for signs indicating view points along the way. There is also signs indicating the sea elephants that you can watch sleep on the beach. We were really lucky and even got to see a lot of whales swimming in the distance.

  • See the golden gate bridge: this is a big classic . There are many view points to see the bridge, you can find all the different ones here. Otherwise you can drive to the bridge and follow the signs.
  • Take pictures of the painted ladies: second classic of San Francisco. If you are a fan of Full House you will especially enjoy this. They are beautiful painted houses lined up next to each other.
  • Explore China town: such a vibrant and fun area to visit with amazing shops and restaurants.
  • Shop vintage on Haight-Ashbury: very eclectic and hippie area which means they have great vintage shops.
  • Take a tour a Alcatraz: you can buy your tickets online and get a tour of the old prison.
  • Walk along Pier 39: really nice walk with a lot of activities. It is very touristy and there is plenty of restaurants and cafes. You can even see sea lions from there. “You will smell before you see them” is what we were told…
  • Eat at the Ferry building farmer’s market: amazing indoor food market
  • Take pictures of cable cars: you can catch really good pictures of cable car at their changing station. There are many all around the city, find the different locations here.
